Medical aesthetics

Medical aesthetics is used generally to improve the external appearance. This area includes beauty and reconstructive surgery, and non-invasive anti-ageing methods. Although medical aesthetics has developed dramatically in recent years, cosmetic surgery is not a 20th-century invention.

The ancient Egyptians were already performing cosmetic surgery almost 4,000 years ago. The first nose reconstructions (rhinoplasty) were carried out in India in 600 BC. Often the desire was less for perfect beauty than for the reconstruction to drive further development. The two world wars and their countless victims resulted in a dramatic increase in reconstructive operations, and thus also in cosmetic surgery.

Today, both the procedures and their affordability and acceptance have made them widely acceptable. Cosmetic procedures - whether surgical or not - have also become socially acceptable in Europe.
